CERAMIC
There is a long history of ceramic art in almost all developed cultures, and often ceramic objects are all the artistic evidence left from vanished cultures, like that of the Nok in Africa over 2,000 years ago.

The technique Studio van de Griend uses to make her sculpture is not a common one in the field of ceramic art. We approaches the clay as a sculptor would approach his stone, from the outside inward.

Below you can see the different stages of the process of van de Griend working in ceramic and a site specific installation made in ceramic for De Pont Museum for Contemporary Art in Tilburg, The Netherlands.

'Rolihlahla'
Museum of Contemporary Art
De Pont Tilburg The Netherlands

The installation: ‘ROLIHLAHLA’ (meaning ‘creating disquiet’ and the birth name of Nelson Mandela). Enormous portraits of mainly smiling prominent world leaders, hanging upside down on steel cables, filling a space at the Museum. The work consists of four black Nobel peace prize winners (Nelson Mandela - Wangari Maathai - Desmond Tutu - Kofi Anan) and the white activist Michael Moore. From an entirely new position, the onlooker is asked to enter a different environment, and perception.
